HOLLY, NJ (October, 2006) Virtua Health Foundation, the resource development arm for Virtua Health, and the Arthritis Foundation, New Jersey Chapter present "A Season for Art," a six week fine art & museum-quality craft exhibition curated by Barbara Hanselman at the Dr. David Flinker Pavilion Art Gallery, Virtua Memorial Hospital Burlington County, 175 Madison Avenue, Mount Holly, NJ. The exhibition takes place from October 4th through November 15th 2006 and is open to the public daily from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM. For more information contact the Virtua Health Foundation (609) 914-8680 and speak with Kim Probst or Diane Gravenstine.

A highlight of the exhibition is the gallery curved-wall display of individually framed works of jewelry in hand crafted cases by Emily Cohen. A framer of art by day and jewelry artist by night, Cohen responded to Hanselman’s request for shadow box cases by making over twenty-one of these exquisite displays from recycled framing materials. These museum-glassed wall boxes showcase not only Cohen’s work but the work of other jewelry artists in the exhibition. “A gallery visitor inquired if the jewelry work in these cases was to be worn or hung on the wall as art,” Hanselman comments, “I told her it was both.” (The cases as well as the jewelry in them are for sale.)

A not-to-be-missed Meet the Artists Reception will be held at the Flinker Pavilion Gallery on Sunday, October 22nd from NOON to 4 PM. On this day, the participating artists will present an art salon display of supplemental work and light refreshments will be served. Admission to this happening is free of charge.

More than three dozen talented artists, including local residents Dressler Smith, Michael Hogan, Tom Sheckels, Traci Beden Tambussi, Barbara Hanselman and Anna Tumas are also featured in this fine art extravaganza. The art on display includes sculpture, jewelry, museum quality clay work and wearables, photography, oil paintings, pastels, watercolors and pencil drawings.

During the Sunday reception, a special Jewelry & Wearables Room will be open to showcase the added work of a dozen area jewelry artists and a "Make and Take" workshop with artist Lissa Atkins will be on-going, where children can spend time creating their own jewelry to wear home.

"The region's best artists are participating in this year's event," said Tanya Barbarics, Director of the Arthritis Foundation, South Jersey area. "It is the perfect opportunity for guests to meet local artists and make purchases from so many different sources of art. There’s artwork for the home and office as well as pieces that would make special gifts for family and friends."

Dressler Smith is a nationally renowned artist and colorist whose paintings are intended to touch the human spirit. Her work has gained national attention and caught the eye of critics and private collectors, including Oprah Winfrey, Coretta Scott King and former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham.

Michael Hogan, a South Jersey photographer whose works capture the beauty of South Jersey's unique ecology, makes viewers aware of the fragility of New Jersey's natural settings while Tom Sheckels’ photographs of panoramic scenes (such as the Grand Canyon) are both haunting and compelling in their breathtaking scale! Both photographers have their own exceptional style of painting with the camera!

Traci Beden Tambussi and Barbara Hanselman are two of the ten clay artists participating in the exhibition who have clay work featured in the 2003 Lark Books publication,"500 Bowls.” Hanselman, best known for her hand-built, featherweight gesture pots, was commissioned in 2006 by the Arts & Business Council of Greater Philadelphia to create clay vessels as annual awards to outstanding area businesses. Her 'Print-to-Pot' transfer technique will appear in the new 2007 Lark Books publication, "Image Transfer on Clay."

Anna Tumas, designer of children's sweaters, learned to knit, crochet, embroider and sew from her beloved Oma (grandmother). The materials for Anna's creations are pure wool sweaters lovingly collected at yard sales and thrift stores. These adult size sweaters are then boiled for maximum shrinkage, cut apart & reassembled. Each new creation is assembled entirely by hand and embellished with vintage trims and buttons. As the demand for Anna’s sweaters grew, so did their size; she now makes cardigans for adults as well as felted scarves and other gift items. Several of Anna’s children’s sweaters are featured in the Belle Armoire, September/October 2006 issue. http://www.stampington.com/html/ba_so06.html#articlesfeatured

ABOUT THE SPONSORS –
Virtua Health is a multi-hospital healthcare organization headquartered in Marlton, NJ.
